Westinghouse WGen9500DF
The Westinghouse WGen9500DF makes 9,500 W running on gasoline and 8,500 W on propane, and starts motors that need up to 12,500 W. It runs about 8 hours at half load on a 6.6-gallon tank of gasoline (maker figure).
Outdoors only, far from doors, windows and vents: the exhaust carries carbon monoxide. It has 240-volt output, so it can feed a well pump through a transfer switch.

The numbers behind that
This generator makes up to 9,500 watts and can start motors that briefly need 12,500 watts. It runs on gasoline or propane. At half load it runs about 8 hours on a tank.
It supplies both 120 and 240 volts, so it can run a well pump or other 240-volt equipment through proper transfer equipment. Of the 16 household loads we track, it can handle 16.
It must run outside. The exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell and which kills.
Judged in: The best portable generators for home backup; The best backup power for a well pump.
Outdoor use only
This generator burns fuel and produces carbon monoxide. Run it outdoors only, well away from doors, windows and vents, with the exhaust pointed away from the building. Fit working CO alarms indoors. no CO sensor listed on manufacturer page

Recall screen
No recall names this model — but a similarly named product was recalled
No recall names the WGen9500DF. CPSC 20-185 (2020) recalls the Westinghouse WGen5300DFv and iGen4500DF made October to December 2019, and 18-055 (2017) the iGen2500 and iPro2500.
This check cannot clear your own unit. Most recalls cover only certain serial numbers. Read the model and serial number off the label on the unit itself, then check the maker's recall page before you use it, sell it, or buy it.

- Oil
- 1.1 qt (37.2 oz / 1.1 L) capacity. Westinghouse specs 10W-30 as the standard oil; the maintenance-guide temperature chart also allows 5W-30 in cold weather, 10W-40 in hot weather, or full synthetic as a substitute for conventional oil. 4-stroke oil only, never 2-stroke oil.westinghouse.com
- Low-oil shutdown
- Yes, automatic low-oil shutdown is includedwestinghouse.com
- Parallel
- No. Westinghouse's own parallel-kit manual states the kit works only with Westinghouse inverter generators; the WGen9500DF is a conventional (non-inverter) open-frame dual-fuel unit and is not among the compatible models. This is an inference from the parallel-kit manual's stated scope, since no Westinghouse page directly says 'WGen9500DF is not parallel-capable' in those words -- but no maker source lists the WGen9500DF as parallel-compatible, and the parallel kit itself is explicitly restricted to the inverter (iGen) line.cdn.westinghouseoutdoorpower.com

What owners report, from public threads and long-term reviews; not our own testing.
- A tractorbynet.com forum poster reported over 200 hours of run time on their WGen9500DF with no problems, and specifically called out liking the digital VFT-style readout that shows voltage output and cumulative running hours.tractorbynet.com
- On powerequipmentforum.com, a thread specifically about this model ('WGen9500DF issue') describes the starter motor/solenoid re-engaging while the engine was already running, throwing sparks near the flywheel housing; the owner had a control board replaced but the fault reportedly persisted. Framed as a single reported hardware fault rather than a confirmed widespread pattern, since it appears in one thread.powerequipmentforum.com
- Multiple threads on powerequipmentforum.com about propane operation on this dual-fuel line (including a WGen9500DF-specific propane quick-connect thread) trace hard-starting or failure-to-start on LP to regulator pressure/adjustment and the quick-connect fitting rather than to a defective generator -- a recurring troubleshooting theme across threads, not a one-off.powerequipmentforum.com
- A separate powerequipmentforum.com thread describes a unit that ran fine on one fuel but would not start on the other (gas vs. propane), which owners and forum members treat as pointing to the fuel-selector solenoid or carburetor circuit as the troubleshooting focus on this dual-fuel platform, rather than a generator-wide defect.powerequipmentforum.com
- Reported case of the starter motor/solenoid re-engaging on an already-running engine, causing sparking and requiring a control-board swap that did not fully resolve the issue in that instance -- treat as an intermittent hardware fault to flag for buyers, not a routine complaint.powerequipmentforum.com
- Hard-starting or no-start on propane is a recurring troubleshooting topic for this dual-fuel line, most often traced to LPG regulator pressure/adjustment or the quick-connect fitting rather than a generator defect -- worth a callout in a buying guide about proper propane setup and regulator seating.powerequipmentforum.com
- A separate failure pattern: the generator starts and runs on one fuel type but fails to start on the other, which forum members treat as a fuel-selector-solenoid or carburetor-circuit issue rather than a total unit failure.powerequipmentforum.com

Fuel and runtime
| Fuel | Running | Starting | Tank | Runtime at 50% load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | 9,500W | 12,500W | 6.6 gal | 8h |
| Propane (LPG) | 8,500W | 11,200W | not stated | 7h |
Runtime is quoted at half load. Your actual runtime falls as load rises, and refuelling a hot generator is itself a burn and fire hazard — let it cool first.
Outlets
- two 120V 5-20R duplex
- 120/240V L14-30R

Outlet configuration decides what you can plug in directly. Powering house circuits instead of appliances requires a transfer switch or inlet installed by a licensed electrician.

Safety boundary
- Outdoor only. Carbon monoxide from this unit is lethal and undetectable by smell.
- Backfeeding is prohibited. Never run a cord from this generator into a wall outlet. It can kill line workers restoring your power.
- Any connection to building wiring requires a licensed electrician and, in most places, a permit and inspection.
- Store fuel safely and away from the running unit. Let the engine cool before refuelling.
