How many watts does a garage door opener use, and how long will a battery run it?

Garage door openers draw about 300–800 W while running and up to 1,800 W for a moment as it starts. They run for seconds or minutes at a time, so a 1 kWh power station gives about 64 minutes of running time at the higher figure. The station’s output must be above the running watts; that is what rules most small units out.

That is the middle of our range for this appliance. Yours may use less or a lot more: the range, the assumptions and every unit we track are below. Hours are hours of use on one full charge, counting about 85% of the battery as usable.

Hours of use by battery size

3,000 Whabout 1,646 h319 h8,500 h
5,000 Whabout 2,743 h531 h14,167 h

Hours = 85% of the nameplate battery divided by average watts. Typical uses about 2 W; hard-working 800 W on 1% of the time; efficient 300 W on 0% of the time. The station must also start it: see which units can, below.

How much battery a typical one needs

OutageBattery needed, typical
12 hoursabout 22 Wh
24 hoursabout 44 Wh
3 daysabout 130 Wh

Nameplate watt-hours, so the 85% usable share is already counted. Past a day, most plans add solar or a generator rather than a bigger battery.

The range behind that

A garage door opener uses about 300–800 watts while running , and needs up to 1,800 watts for a split second when it starts. Over 24 hours it uses roughly 7–192 watt-hours.

Buy for the higher number in each range. 65 of the 73 products we track can run it. For example, the Zendure SuperBase V6400 gives about 7 hours of running time at full power.

This one is not plug-and-play. It is wired into your house, so you need a licensed electrician.

The numbers behind that

The opener runs for seconds per cycle, so its energy contribution is close to nothing. It appears here for the starting surge, not the energy.

The momentary surge when a motor or compressor kicks in. Undersized systems fail here, not on running watts.

Startup surge compared with running wattsA chart of power over time. The line sits at zero while the fridge is off, jumps briefly to about 2,900 watts when the compressor starts, then settles at about 700 watts while it runs. watts time → 700W running 2,900W startup spike under a second off
A refrigerator draws about 700W while running, but jumps to roughly 2,900W for under a second when the compressor kicks in. That spike is what shuts down an undersized power station — not the running watts.

Wired into the building

This is connected to your house wiring, not an outlet. Powering it from a portable source needs a transfer switch or an inlet installed by a licensed electrician. Never run a cord from a generator into an outlet to feed a circuit: backfeeding can kill line workers and start fires.

Plugged-in appliances compared with wired-in appliancesTwo panels. On the left a fridge connects to a power station through a normal plug, which you can do yourself. On the right a furnace blower connects directly to the breaker panel with no plug, which requires a licensed electrician. Plugged in You can do this yourself fridge power station a normal plug Wired in Licensed electrician only furnace blower breaker panel no plug anywhere
If it has a plug, you can run it from a power station or a generator's outlet today. If it is wired into your house, no portable box can reach it without transfer equipment fitted by a licensed electrician.

Safety

Every residential opener has a manual release cord. During an outage you can disconnect and lift the door by hand, which is usually the better answer than sizing a backup system around it.

What can run it

Running time on one full charge at the higher running figure. “Starts it” means the peak output covers even a hard-starting one; “may not start a hard-starting one” means it covers the lower end of the starting range only.

What will not work, and why

4 of 73 products cannot run this.

  • Jackery Explorer 300D — Continuous output is 140W. This appliance draws at least 300W while running, so this unit cannot run them even in the best case.
  • Anker SOLIX C300 — Peak output is 600W but starting your biggest motor needs at least 800W. Motors pull several times their normal power for a split second when they start. That split second is what shuts down an undersized unit.
  • Jackery Explorer 300 v2 — Peak output is 600W but starting your biggest motor needs at least 800W. Motors pull several times their normal power for a split second when they start. That split second is what shuts down an undersized unit.
  • EcoFlow RIVER 3 — Peak output is 600W but starting your biggest motor needs at least 800W. Motors pull several times their normal power for a split second when they start. That split second is what shuts down an undersized unit.
